Member of the volunteer surface-support team assisting a diver about to
enter the water.
LAMP is seeking the help of interested members of the public who share
our interest in maritime history and feel that it is worth studying and
protecting. We feel that the maritime heritage preserved beneath sea
and river belongs not only to archaeologists but to all of us, and it
is therefore important that we provide opportunities for both locals
and visitors to work side by side with archaeologists, assisting with
the investigation and interpretation of our maritime past. There are
many ways for you to get involved and to help us accomplish our
research goals. You may wish to participate in our laboratory work,
where you might share your drawing, computer, photography, or other
skills and get a chance to work "hands-on" with centuries-old
artifacts. You might be interested in helping us search for,
catalogue, transcribe, or analyze historic documents that our
researchers have collected, or that are located in various depositories
throughout the region. If you have specialized skills such as
boat-handling, engine mechanics, or ship-model-building, we can use your
expertise. And if you are a certified diver you can qualify to join our
scientific diving team, and work in the field alongside our
archaeologists as we investigate historic shipwrecks and make exciting
discoveries. If you are not a diver, but would still like to
participate in our fieldwork, you can volunteer to work as surface
support on our research vessels or to sift through screens for artifacts
during our excavations.
If you are interested in volunteering with LAMP, please contact our
Volunteer Coordinator, Debe Thompson, at 904-829-0745 ext. 212 or email
her at dthompson@staugustinelighthouse.com. Debe
will schedule an interview with all potential volunteers, so that you will have
a chance to meet with her and LAMP's archaeological staff. The first step is to
download our Volunteer Application
Form, which you should complete and bring with you to the interview.
If you are a certified diver and want to learn how to join the LAMP
scientific diving team, click here to see the requirements of the
program and to download the necessary paperwork. If you are a college student studying archaeology, history, or a
related field, you might be interested in participating in our
undergraduate or graduate internship program. Depending on our
current budget, we can sometimes offer stipends to college interns
to offset living expenses in St. Augustine. Please contact our
Volunteer Coordinator at the number or
email listed above.
If you are too busy to volunteer at this time, but have some information
you'd like to share with us, such as the location of an old shipwreck,
artifacts you've found on the beach, or a tidbit of maritime history passed
down within your family, we'd love for you to get in touch with us at LAMP@staugustinelighthouse.com. Or
post a message at our blog, if you'd like to share with or join the larger
LAMP community.

it can help generate grant funding in support of our program. You can
simply download it, fill it out on your computer, and email it to dthompson@staugustinelighthouse.com with the subject
heading "LAMP volunteer hours for [your name]".
