The inaugural Northeast Florida Symposium on Underwater Archaeology was held at the Guana
Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve, Ponte Vedra Beach just north of
St. Augustine from March 20th through the 22nd, 2007. The Symposium, which was free and
open to the general public, covered a host of topics including prehistoric underwater
archaeology, the archaeology of a number of shipwreck sites in Florida, agency
jurisdictions of submerged cultural resources, international shipwreck projects, and
graduate student archaeological research projects. The symposium is intended to foster a
better appreciation and understanding of underwater archaeology by county, state, and
federal agency employees as well as the general public. It was well-attended and
attracted a wide range of archaeologists, many of whom are considered leaders in their
field, representing academia, government agencies, private archaeological firms, and
private non-profit research institutes. The unanimous consensus was that the Symposium
was a great success and with that enthusiasm from our colleagues we are committed to
hosting this meeting on an annual basis.
In addition, we are currently in negotiations with several publishers interested in
publishing a Symposium Proceedings volume. The Symposium program, which lists all of the
speakers, their paper titles, and abstracts, is available as a download below.
