Traveling Sea Chest
What is it?
A series of five, 2-hour, interdisciplinary units working through maritime history contained in a Traveling Sea Chest. The five units can be done in sequence or independently of each other. The intended audience is grades 3-5, but many of the 5th grade activities are also suitable for middle school students. The activities serve educational standards in social studies, science, math, language arts, and health.
What’s in it?
The Traveling Sea Chest is brought to a school for a 2-week time period and includes all equipment necessary to implement the activities within each unit. Each unit includes a CD with print masters, lesson plans, a list of teacher and student resources, Sunshine Standards, a glossary, and images as well as necessary inventory, administrative, and evaluation forms.
What about preparation and follow up?
There are suggested pre and post unit activities as well as optional outreach program(s) by museum staff to augment certain activities. Teacher in-services regarding the Traveling Sea Chest are also available.
